Other TJB Diversions

Now that you've absorbed a wealth of data on the Brass, here's are a couple of other Tijuana Brass items of interest!

The latest, and most ingenious, in the recent rash of TJB-mania is this "tubular" collection of TJB classics done a la surf! Surf style TJB seem a bit strange at first? Consider that Herb and the gang recorded the Ventures' classic "Walk, Don't Run" on their !!Going Places!! album, and the fact that this CD's title, Surfin' Senorita, takes its name from a track on the Volume 2 album. Many of the bands on this CD hail from the Austin, TX area, including such notables as Space Cossacks, Insect Surfers, Sir Finks, Sandbalsters, Halibuts, and Donna Ho. Infectious fun...not to be missed! For more information on this album, click on the album cover to surf your way over to Wildebeest Records!

Mark Astolfi's Tijuana Brass Clone List

Nobody at TijuanaBrass.com has a more extensive list of Tijuana Brass clone albums than Stolf. These are bands from the TJB era who in some way borrow, beg or steal the basic sound or concept of the Brass, or poke fun at them either through comedy or parodies. Please e-mail Stolf or A&M Corner if you have any additions to suggest.

Soul Asylum did a parody of the classic Whipped Cream & Other Delights album cover, for their album Clam Dip & Other Delights, including liner notes that paralleled the original TJB notes.

Clam Dip & Other Delights

Liner Notes for Whipped Cream and Clam Dip
(The liner notes for the TJB album are in italics)

Herb Alpert: A lot has been said about Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, and there's a lot more to be said about them. Their popularity has grown enormously in the two years since admirers started shouting "OLE" for "The Lonely Bull".

Soul Asylum: Not much has been said about Soul Asylum, in spite of which there's not much more to say. Their popularity has grown marginally in the six years since admirers started shouting "OUCH" for "Broken Glass."

Herb Alpert: It began with the teenagers, we thought. But at the Brass' debut as Concert artists in San Francisco, we noticed, to our delight, that it's easier to skin an ameoba than to catalog the "Typical Tijuana Brass Fan." The teens were there, but so were the "hippies" and the "squares", the "little old ladies" and the

sreen startlets, the celebrities and those who make celebrities. In fact, one admirer, who looked as though he stepped from a page in Esquire said, "You would think that a lot of these people whould be home watching the man who serves the bubbles."

Soul Asylum: It began with the soaks, we thought. But at the Asylum's debut as Con artists in St. Paul, we noticed, in our fright, that it's easier to shave an ant than to catalog the "Typical Soul Asylum Fan." Sure, the drunks were there, but so were the "punks" and the "geeks", the "dirty old men" and the Molly Ringwald wannabees, the custodial crew and Karl's mom. In fact, one observer, who looked as though he stepped from a page in Your Flesh said, "You would think that most of these people would have just stayed home and done their laundry or something."

Herb Alpert: We noticed another joyus thing. Herb Alpert was something special. His good looks and sensitivity brought an immediate response from the industry. The word is that Herb Alpert could make stardom in films. The agents, bookers, managers and publicist picked on Herb and the Brass and the phones started ringing. Life, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass are in happy harmony.

Soul Asylum: We noticed another thing. These guys were something, uh, "special". Their cruddy appearance and irascibility brought an immediate response from the industry. "Not with a 2000 foot pole," said one prominent merchandiser. The leeches, bloodsuckers and weasels refused to have lunch, and the phone never rang. Life goes on.

Herb Alpert: There is a triumphant atmosphere surrounding the Brass today. The pleasure that comes from performing for enthusiasts belongs to them. Our joys are compounded by our acceptance. And so, on behalf of Herb and the Tijuana Brass, we humbly thank you for listening.
-- A & M Records

Soul Asylum: A dark cloud hangs over Soul Asylum to this day. They continue to write and perform purely to please themselves. Their cynicism is tempered only by the fact that in spite of all the ridicule, they have after six years been able to borrow enough scrfatch to quit their day jobs. So to those of you bold enough (or silly enough) to partake in this ruse, thanks for the money.
